Everyone takes this photo
993 RS? LHD but UK plates.
993 RS? LHD but UK plates.
The area round the ring is gorgeous, both in hilly scenery, castles, twisty roads, but the area is like cars and coffee on crack. I tried to find more interesting cars and stories; there are enough E90 and E46 M3s for days. But Alpine? Ro80? Chevy Beretta? Oh, yeah! /KoolAidGuy
Who let the Opel Mokka on?
E36 318Ti
TT with an exciting paint job
Alfa!
E36 4-door
Miata can always be an answer
Hooray Opel!
Lookie here! An Audi Quattro! Let’s look inside!
I want a car that has a steering wheel worth autographing!
Of all the cars you could bring, you bring this?
How did you wind up in Europe?
Moment of zen
Ahhhhh
MBZ 190 2.5-16 Evo... hnnnnnng What’s in the background?
A wild Weismann GT appears, with 2x Rolls Royce Corniche and a Corvette in the background!
OK, that’s enough for now. My upstream is too slow.

I can explain the blue 911 being LHD with UK plates.....those are French plates!
It’s from department 68, part of Alsace.

I think Beretta GTZ was sold in Europe too. That one has US spec headlights though so it could be a later import (or someone has swapped them).

I believe the Mokka is a Hertz rental. Not a good idea - get caught on the Ring by a mass market rental agency, and you’ll get blacklisted.

You can thank me for pointing that one out.. walking through the lots with a beer is better than sitting at some of the corners/viewpoints (depending on what’s on track that day...). I totally pointed out that POS PT Cruiser.. and the Beretta. Actually, it was more “OH HOLY SHIT, YOU NEED TO GET A PIC OF THAT! WTF IS THAT DOING HERE?!” followed by me holding/drinking @katzmandu’s beer while he took a pic.

I’m taking your word on the American headlights for the basis of my response, cause I could not tell you the difference. However the Berretta is Most likely an American Armed Forces Car. If a German imports a car from the US, it must be converted to meet German specs... a German friend of mine brought back his Mercedes 500SEL from the US and is constantly getting told his headlights are wrong when his inspections are due. In fact when I lived in Germany I went to a dealership that sold American spec cars, wanting to get a car I could drive in Germany, and then bring back to the US. However since I was not in Germany with the DOD, I was there with a German residency Visa I was not able to buy one of the cars and drive it in Germany. American Armed Forces are mostly exempt from such rules, they have their own license plates, their own drivers licenses. It does appear that the license is in the windshield, a very American thing to do, but not at all a German thing to do, so it does lend some credence to the possibility. I can't make out the plate enough to confirm if it is an American Armed Forces plate. However if you see a car with American Armed Forces plates on the Autobahn, watch out, they will likely be left lane hogs, pissing off all the Germans trapped behind them.

I sort of Wonder if that Weismann GT is the one I used to see every time I went anywhere near the Ring. I doubt it because of the GL on the plates, I always saw it south of the Ring, or at the Ring. GL would put it's home north of the Ring near Köln. Still it seams odd that 90% of the time I went to the Ring I was the same guy driving a Weismann just like that one. You have a picture at the Ring of a Weismann just like the one I used to always see... seems like it could be the same one.

The headlights are easy to tell apart as the European ones are quad sealed beam units (kind of similar to 3rd gen Camaro). I kinda forgot the tuv testing. We have similar system here in Finland, hence why almost all newer US imports you see here have aftermarket head- and taillights.

The side markers are a clear indicator as well. Talking about indicators, European market cars need side indicators. This Chevy seems to have side markers yet no side indicators, probably making it US spec.

Why would anyone rent such a car to take on the ring? You tend to be able to get a much nicer and larger car for the same amount of money. One that handles better than a tall vehicle as well.

While as Ce he sin correctly points out that the Porsche RS isn’t wearing U.K. Plates.
It is possible to buy used LHD and order new LHD cars in the U.K.
I know of a Skoda owner who has two cars he bought new and registered in the U.K. One is RHD and one LHD that he uses for when he’s driving on business in Holland.
It is worth noting though that the car is wrongly not wearing a national identifier either as an ‘F’ for France in a roundel on the rear or on the left hand side of the licence plate.

Idiot tourists are idiots.
I just know Hertz uses the “DN” (Duren) prefix that appears to be on that car, and I also think I see a barcode in the rear side window. Mainstream rental companies prohibit their cars to be used there - I’ve heard stories that some will even employ spotters during busy tourist days.
